What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the inner labia (vaginal lips), which are the folds of skin surrounding the vulva. It involves reshaping the labia minora (inner lips) for cosmetic purposes or to relieve discomfort. During a labiaplasty, the surgeon carefully trims excess tissue from the labia using different techniques to alter their size, shape, or symmetry. This procedure usually takes 60-90 minutes.

Labiaplasty Techniques

Trim Technique

The trim technique removes excess labia tissue using a scalpel or surgical scissors. Such direct trimming creates a more symmetrical appearance of the inner vaginal lips. This approach is used when we need to remove a lot of tissue. In addition, the trim technique helps to eliminate the dark pigmented border of the labia minora. As a result, vaginal lips have a more youthful, pink color.

Wedge Technique

The wedge technique removes unwanted skin by making a V-shaped wedge excision (cut) in the thickest part of the protruding labia minora. It allows the two labia edges to be brought together and sutured, reducing the length of the labia minora while preserving the natural edge contours. This approach is helpful when there is less protrusion of the vaginal lips. It does not address the dark pigmentation on the border of the labia minora.

Combination Technique

The combination technique utilizes the principles from both the trim and wedge methods. The surgeon analyzes each patient’s anatomy and goals to determine the optimal combination of trimming excess edges and cutting a wedge of tissue from the labia minora. This customized approach aims to preserve the natural appearance while reducing protrusion. The combination technique is an overall improvement over each method alone, so it can help achieve more impressive results.

Consultation &
Preparation for Labiaplasty

Before scheduling labiaplasty, patients should meet with the surgeon to discuss their goals, examine anatomy, and review medical history. If the person is a good candidate, we will explain different labiaplasty techniques to help them choose the optimal procedure. Patients are advised to stop smoking for at least 4 weeks before the operation to reduce the risk of complications. In addition, we provide instructions for nutrition, avoiding certain medications/supplements, and arranging transportation home. Careful preparation helps patients understand the procedure and set appropriate expectations.

Labiaplasty Procedure

Anesthesia

Labiaplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable throughout the procedure. However, the patient can also decide to have it performed under general anesthesia.

Incisions

The surgeon makes small incisions on the edges of the inner vaginal lips. The type and pattern of these cuts may vary depending on the technique used and the patient’s anatomy. The goal is to place the incisions in inconspicuous locations to minimize scarring. The surgeon can use one of the three techniques:

Trim technique: the enlarged labia minora is trimmed along the borders.
Wedge technique: includes a V-shaped cut, removal of the wedge of skin, followed by stitching of the remaining edges.
Combination technique: involves the use of both trim and wedge methods.

Tissue Removal and Reshaping

Excess labia skin is then cut out using surgical scissors or a scalpel. The remaining tissue is meticulously brought together and reshaped using dissolvable sutures to create smooth edges and anatomical balance. Excess skin may also be trimmed to achieve the desired aesthetic results.

Closure

Once the labia minora have been contoured into a more proportionate size and shape, the incisions are thoroughly cleaned and closed. Dissolvable sutures are used so that no future removal is required. Steri-Strips and gauze padding may also be applied as needed.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Clitoral hood reduction focuses specifically on reducing excess tissue around the clitoris. Some women choose to undergo this procedure together with labiaplasty. Our surgeon can perform a labiaplasty to alter the vaginal lips and trim back the clitoral hood area for aesthetic reasons or to increase its sensation. Patients may benefit from combining these procedures because they will achieve better results and have a single recovery period instead of two.

Recovery After Labiaplasty

Recovery from labiaplasty usually takes 2-4 weeks. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for at least a month after the operation to allow proper healing. While the surgery does not affect the vaginal opening, there will be some swelling and bruising in the genital area, especially during the first 7 days. However, any discomfort can be managed with medication.

Patients may also experience minor bleeding for a few days after surgery. We recommend Keeping the area clean and wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4-6 weeks to support proper healing.

Most patients can resume light activities, including gentle exercise, within 14 days after labiaplasty. Full recovery may take about 3 months. Patients should visit all follow-up appointments to help us monitor healing progress.

I just had ChinXpress awake liposuction procedure with Exert Bodysculpt. I want to start off by saying it was a great experience! Best team ever:) I was nervous about what the pain was going to be like because it is an awake procedure. I was pleasantly surprised, there was no pain, and my recovery so far has been great!!!
